IKEA Gift for Obama Academy STEAM School Store
The Challenge
Obama Academy wanted to transform a middle school classroom into a functioning STEAM School Store—a space where students could create and sell merchandise for sports teams, clubs, and local organizations. However, the program lacked the essential furniture, organizational tools, and storage solutions needed to get started. Without funding, the vision for a hands-on, student-run business remained out of reach.
The Program
Led by Mrs. Peggy Festa, a 6th grade teacher, the STEAM School Store is a student-run business that equips students with real-world skills in entrepreneurship, marketing, and financial management. Using embroidery machines, screen printers, and heat presses, students design and produce custom merchandise for their school community and beyond.
A key leader in this effort was Orli Trumbull, Class of 2026, who represented Purple Eagle in spearheading the partnership with IKEA. Orli contacted IKEA directly, coordinated the application process, and managed communications between the school and IKEA. Her work demonstrated the power of student leadership in mobilizing community support and bringing resources to schools.
This type of School-Based Enterprise (SBE) integrates directly into classroom learning:
· Hands-on learning: Students serve as cashiers, marketers, managers, and production team members.
· Curriculum integration: Connected to STEAM, business management, marketing, and financial literacy classes.
· Revenue reinvestment: Profits are directed back into the program to cover materials, supplies, and expansion.
Goals of the Program
· Provide custom school merchandise for sports teams, clubs, and district organizations.
· Give students hands-on experience in running a business.
· Develop leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
· Build a sustainable, self-funded enterprise that supports future STEAM education.
The Result
With the help of IKEA, Obama Academy’s vision came to life. IKEA contributed $9,737.64 worth of supplies and sent employees to assemble the furniture and storage systems on-site.
Thanks to Orli’s initiative and Purple Eagle’s support, the School Store will enjoy a much more organized space. Future students will now have the opportunity to run a real business inside their school — one that generates revenue for their education and inspires future entrepreneurs.
